/ John Gray (1998)
Título : | Hayek on liberty | Tipo de documento: | texto impreso | Autores: | John Gray, Autor | Editorial: | London : Routledge | Fecha de publicación: | 1998 | Número de páginas: | 187 p | ISBN/ISSN/DL: | 978-0-415-17315-5 | Idioma : | Inglés (eng) | Clasificación: | [Palabras claves]CRÍTICA E INTERPRETACIÓN [Palabras claves]HAYEK, FRIEDRICH AUGUST, 1899-1992 [Palabras claves]LIBERALISMO ECONÓMICO
| Resumen: | Not available since the 1980s, this up-dated edition by the leading political philosopher, John Gray, outlines his new position on Hayek. In a substantial new chapter, Gray assesses how far the historical development of the last ten years can be deployed in a critique of Hayek's thought. His reassessment is not only a provoking study of a classical philosopher. It is also a timely contribution to the debate over the future of conservatism, as Gray argues that Hayekian liberalism - 'the most well-articulated political theory of the new right' - is flawed. | Nota de contenido: | 1. Hayek's system of ideas : its origins and scope -- 2. The idea of a spontaneous social order -- 3. The law of liberty -- 4. Economic theory and public policy -- 5. Some contrasts and comparisons -- 6. Assessment and criticism. |

/ John Stuart Mill (1998)
Título : | On liberty and other essays | Tipo de documento: | texto impreso | Autores: | John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) ; John Gray, Prefacio, etc | Editorial: | New York : Oxford University Press | Fecha de publicación: | 1998 | Colección: | Oxford World's Classics | Número de páginas: | 592 p | ISBN/ISSN/DL: | 978-0-19-283384-6 | Idioma : | Inglés (eng) | Clasificación: | [Palabras claves]DERECHOS CIVILES [Palabras claves]DERECHOS DE LAS MUJERES [Palabras claves]FILOSOFIA INGLESA [Palabras claves]GOBIERNO [Palabras claves]LIBERTAD-FILOSOFÍA [Palabras claves]UTILITARISMO
| Resumen: | Collected here in a single volume for the first time are John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, Utilitarianism, Considerations on Representative Government, and The Subjection of Women. These essays show Mill applying his liberal utilitarian philosophy to a range of issues that remain vital today--the nature of ethics, the scope and limits of individual liberty, the merits of and costs of democratic government, and the place of women in society. In his Introduction John Gray describes these essays as applications of Mill's doctrine of the Art of Life, as set out in A System of Logic. Using the resources of recent scholarship, he shows Mill's work to be far richer and subtler than traditional interpretations allow.
